How to cut a living hinge to length
Short answer: a living hinge cuts with an ordinary utility knife. If the exact length isn't in the list, buy the next size up, measure the edge of your panel, and trim the hinge to match. Then press the panels into the channels and you're done.
Which hinge
There are two channel sizes. The 3 to 4.5 mm hinge fits 1/8 inch and 3/16 inch sheet and has a 0.2 inch channel. The 6 mm hinge fits 1/4 inch sheet and has a 0.24 inch channel. Both are the same 1.24 inch overall width. Lengths run from 4 to 72 inches.
Cutting it
- Measure the panel edge the hinge will sit on.
- Mark the hinge and cut it square with a sharp utility knife on a cutting board. A couple of firm passes is enough; the PVC is soft.
- Check the fit against the panel before you assemble.
Fitting the panels
Slide each sheet into its channel until it seats. Friction does the holding: no screws, no glue, no drilling. Panels swing up to 300 degrees, and three or more hinged together stand on their own. To take it apart, pull the panels out and reuse the hinge.
