Removing the protective film from acrylic

Short answer: leave the protective film on until you have finished cutting, drilling and handling the piece, then lift a corner and peel it back in one slow pull. Every sheet we cut is masked on both sides, so remember the second side.

Why the film is there

The paper or plastic masking protects the polished surface in transit and while you work. Acrylic itself is far tougher than glass, but its surface scratches more easily than its edges suggest, so the masking earns its keep right up to installation.

Three ways to start the peel

A corner that will not lift is the only hard part. We use three methods, each shown in a short video.

Razor method

Scissor method

Razor and tube method

After the peel

If a little adhesive residue stays behind, a soft cloth and mild soapy water lift it. Avoid solvents and rough cloths on the polished face.
