Which acrylic thickness do you need?
Short answer: 3 mm (1/8 inch) is the everyday choice for frames, signs and small panels; 6 mm (1/4 inch) for anything that needs to hold its shape at a larger size; 9 mm and 12 mm for heavy-duty and industrial work. Thinner 1 mm and 2 mm sheet is for engraving and small craft cuts.
The seven thicknesses
| Thickness | Typical use | Weight per square foot |
|---|---|---|
| 1 mm | Very light cuts, inserts, layered craft work | 0.24 lb |
| 2 mm (5/64 in) | Engraving on a hobby cutter, small shapes | 0.49 lb |
| 3 mm (1/8 in) | Frames, signs, displays, most home projects. Our floating frames use two 3 mm panels. | 0.74 lb |
| 4.5 mm (3/16 in) | Larger signs and panels that need a little more stiffness | 1.1 lb |
| 6 mm (1/4 in) | Heavier duty projects, shelving, guards; also cuts well with a table saw or jigsaw | 1.5 lb |
| 9 mm (3/8 in) | Rigid heavy-duty pieces around the house, shop or farm | 2.2 lb |
| 12 mm (1/2 in) | Extra rigid, industrial and structural uses | 2.9 lb |
